There’s no question that food advertising influence children’s food preferences. Just watch any shopper wheeling their cart down the cereal aisle with a child in tow. A recent Greek study looked at the ways cereal advertising affects children’s behaviors.

The researchers studied elementary school children using standardized testing designed to quantitate the children’s lifestyle patterns, food consumption patterns, and response to advertising. They found that nearly half (47%) of the children frequently consumed unhealthy foods.

Four different aspects of food advertising were found to significantly influence the children’s desires for specific food:
1. Expectations of the desirability of the food
2. Purchasing the food will result in positive feelings such as happiness or satisfaction
3. Entertaining commercials result in pleasant mood
4. Children are generally too young to understand how persuasive food advertising is.
