Lactobacillus and Abdominal Pain
March 8, 2018
The Question: Does the use of Lactobacillus reuteri lessen functional abdominal pain in children?
The Study: Functional abdominal pain is abdominal pain with no detectable cause. In this study, 101 children aged six to fifteen years old were divided into two groups. Forty-six received L. reuteri and the remainder received a placebo. During the eight weeks of the study, a daily questionnaire was completed on symptoms.
The Results: The treatment group reported less feelings of abdominal distention and bloating. School attendance and other gastrointestinal symptoms were similar in both groups.
Comment: This study supported previous studies showing the effectiveness of L. reuteri in treating abdominal pain in children. However, it should not be started until other potential causes are eliminated.
