Childhood Lead Levels and Criminal Behavior

The Question: Is childhood lead exposure associated with adult criminal behavior?

The Study: In this study from New Zealand, the lead levels of 553 eleven-year-olds were measured and treated if elevated. The children were followed for 27 years, periodically reporting any criminal activity or convictions.

The Results: The researchers concluded: “Findings failed to support a dose-response association between blood lead levels and consequential criminal offending.”

Comment: The length of this study is unique – over a quarter of a century. It’s good news for children exposed to lead.
